In a New York Minute

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor during Hitler’s reign, was executed by the Nazi regime. His opposition to Hitler’s dictatorship, euthanasia programs, and persecution of the Jews placed him at odds with the Nazis. During his life, Bonhoeffer fully witnessed the German predisposition to "stand by and let evil happen.” However, he persisted to teach the words of Christ and speak out against genocide in a hostile environment. His life and his words are a reminder to us that evil will thrive unless we are "proactive for truth." Bonhoeffer stated, “Action springs not from thought, but from a readiness for responsibility.”

NYC's One World Trade Center was lit in pink during January 2019 to commemorate New York’s Reproductive Health Act. The tower itself was meant to be a monument for life lost during the 9/11/01 terrorists attacks.

Advance forward seventy-five years from Bonhoeffer's untimely death, and we come upon the first anniversary of New York’s Reproductive Health Act (RHA). The 2019 New York law infamously legalized the killing of babies in the womb up to birth. An outcry resounded throughout the U.S. as many were shocked at the New York legislature's barbarism. Such evil was incomprehensible; however, the raw emotional response dissipated as Americans once again became preoccupied with their own lives, their own troubles, and their own busyness. In a New York minute, the nation returned to "normal."

Consequently, normal must never follow the lead of complacency. Citing Bonhoeffer's example, Americans who have a relationship with Christ must continue to stand for those who cannot speak. Even though the pro-life movement has experienced gains over the last several years, apathy is not an option. This reality is punctuated by New York's abomination. The horror of abortion must continue to be highlighted, and pro-lifers must share the larger implications with society…those implications being a devaluing of human life, possible future euthanasia programs, and God’s ultimate wrath. Furthermore, it must be remembered that with any change in national political leadership, a tidal wave of progressive policies can destroy all gains made in local and national pro-life efforts. Constant vigilance is warranted.

Finally, let us all remember that the abortion industry takes advantage of the helpless (both mothers and babies). Continued prayers will be needed in 2020 along with a willingness to support pro-life education. There is no rest in the current American environment.

Proverbs 31:8-9

Open your mouth for the mute, For the rights of all the unfortunate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, And defend the rights of the afflicted and needy.
